Singapore transport is world best

May 29th, 2008

In continuation on the previous post on SMRT, here’s some of the things I observed.

Let us see the timeline of what is happening in Singapore:-

During the period where the road can hardly cope with the traffic, and yet the downpayment for car is forfeited.

Remember the period when the COE drop, what happen? Suddenly, there’s a influx of people purchasing cars.

Then government tell us that the road is too congested and encourage us to take public transport instead. In addition, we are more environmentally friendly in doing so.

Then what you hear next is the announcement to set up more ERP to help control traffic.

So now more and more people are now taking public transport but the public transport cannot handle the volume.

Should we get a car or continue to take public transport?

Now, left or right, we are being screwed.

I think the uncle I talk to bring up a very good point. The transport companies are corporatized so as to do thing more in their favour. Majority of the transport system in the world are government-owned and are in red. Transport is usually subsidized in those countries and if the government wanted to privatised it, protest will be seen.

It is just ironic to be living in a country where every company seems to be earning money except the people. But then, in exchange, we get the security other people often longed for.

Experiencing the second-class citizen effect

May 28th, 2008

The funny thing is that even living in my own countries, locals are also treated as a second-class citizen by its own people.

My friend ordered a drink before the ang-moh and got hers after him because the manager specifically requested to get his drink to be done first.

Is the ang-mohs really that great? Why people so enthusiastic in trying to associate themselves with the ang-mohs. I don’t see any benefit in sucking up to them. Excluding the SPGs.

We should stop selling ourselves short and show more respect for ourselves

700 more train ride. More illusion ahead?

May 26th, 2008

SMRT has willing to spend $5mil to introduce another 700 train ride per week. There are some questions raised like why 50% of the train ride is added is during lunch time. Is there a need to cater to such people who will only take 2-3 stops to find a place to lunch?

Of cos, it would be more sensible to add more trains during the rush hour. However, it is explained as the ability of the track to handle the load is already at its maximum.

Why not shorten the waiting time per station instead?

If every citizen is willing to think of the big picture and allow passengers to come out instead of rushing in, it is quite possible to cut the waiting time by more than 30 seconds.

700 seems a lot but it just looks like another number game. But let us see how 700 more rides can help us. Let us assume SMRT is working at 7 days a week with 18.5 hours from 0530 to 1200. Assuming a uniform distribution of interarrival, 700/(7×18.5) = 5.4 more train per hour. Seriously how can 5 more trains per hour help? Improve by 1 or 0.5 minute?

When SMRT spend another so-called projected 5mil to run those 700 trains weekly, it seems to indicate that the cost will eventually pass down to consumer soon!

ICJ awards Pedra Branca’s sovereignty to Singapore

May 25th, 2008

Congrats Singapore for winning the case. Many bloggers has already state their insight on this issue. Can’t remember cos I’m reading it in camp. Well, at least we got the lighthouse that is of vital importance to our status as one of the best hub in the world.

ICJ awards Pedra Branca’s sovereignty to Singapore: “THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague in the Netherlands has awarded sovereignty over Pedra Branca island to Singapore, while the sovereignty of Middle Rocks has been awarded to Malaysia.”

US already in recession, says Warren Buffet

May 25th, 2008

When one of the richest man has decided that recession is already in states, it’ll be quite hard to refute his knowledge. IMO, it is due to the Beijing Olympic and recent disaster events that make us lose focus on the economic recession that we need to deal with.

US already in recession, says Warren Buffet: “BERLIN : While economists quibble, the world’s richest man has decided: the United States is already in recession. So Warren Buffett tells German magazine Der Spiegel in an interview to be published on Monday.”

Data visualization: Social Networking map of the world

May 25th, 2008

Found this interesting article via Boing Boing. Seriously I din know how they got the data to map to the countries but everyone got their own way.

After going through my FYP, data visualization using computer alogorithm has always been a fascination to me. Use of clustering methods like k-means, ksom, svm and so on … Forget about the lingo I’m using and just enjoy the pictures instead

A visualization of the purported marketshare of various online social networking services. It’s super interesting, but incomplete: I wonder where the data on China is? Click for larger size. From Le Monde, via Azeem Azar on twitter, via Tim O’Reilly’s blog. (thanks Jolon Bankey!)

Tuesday, in Detention Barrack

May 24th, 2008

On Tuesday, I’m given the task of escorting 3 detainees from Mowbray detention barrack. I heard from my friend that they actually made the stupid mistake of scolding the C S M when the brigage R S M actually overheard. I feel the same too. Bear in mind all this happen in oversea training after A T E C! yes w t f right. It’s really a pity.

When I reached the guard room, I exchanged my pass while waiting for document to process. The waiting took me 2 hours! I had trouble keeping myself awake until I was called by the guards to enter the compound. There’s not much to see cos it’s all fenced except for a few building that has all their window covered.

The 3 detainees was escorted by a military police (MP). They were very obedient and they don’t dare to see anyone except the wall. They greet every other people sir even private. One of them commented that db is a place where the C S M is really like a god.

Clearing the paper took quite some time and I can hear them grumble for me to process the document faster. I find it quite inhumane (the way they say it) the way a CPL handle the detainees. The detainees are treated like dogs even when they are almost out! I can see one of them had his eyes already turned misty.

3 of them are quite big-sized, which sort of strike a fear in me. What should I do if they attack me to escape etc etc. But they turn out to be quite gentle despite they size.

The first thing they asked me is to talk to him more. One of them even counted the amount of word he speak during the days inside. They are so happy just to get to talk and to see the sunlight. Life can be so simple right? Of cos they grumble about the food inside and even changed their opinion of SFI.

I’m slightly moved getting to see all these. Lots of question about life is suddenly overwhelmed my mind.

Social Media Breakfast 2

May 24th, 2008

Even though it is held at 11am, it should be more of a lunch then breakfast. You know in SAF, lunch time starts at 1130? Haha either way, thanks Darryl for organizing this event. It’s a really cool place to be in even though I’ve been around this area for more than 10 years or so. You can check out the pictures to see how true it is.

Good thing, weather is good and easy to find my way there. On the outside, it just looks like any other shop but inside, it looks like a paradise on its own if not because of the Singapore weather. Gotta make new friends over there like Justina, Su Yee (not very sure), Natalie, Lodestar(finally get to meet you in person) and many many others. Of cos not to forget about Nadnut (the moob maniac and anti-sonyerricson hp cam), Daphne the hello kitty, Krisando the model, Claudia, Brian, Nicole, DK, Miccheng, Bernard, Jean, Hendri, Rinaz, Jayden, Brad, Sabrina and the crew from tech65 (Jerrick, Ntt, Daniel, Farenlli). Preetam Rai, the guy I met during Ogilvy event, is also another interesting person to talk to especially about social media.

I very much enjoyed talking with Nicole’s peer working for the gahmen. So you not going to keel us all right bcos Nic leak out something? :)

Hope to come to more of such event as well as to improve my knowledge on social media.

O yes, the address of the place is 124 owen road. very near Farrer park mrt station, I find it a very attractive place if I wanna bring someone special along.

I got into the Starbucks Wall Of Fame!

May 24th, 2008

Yes I got into starbucks wall of fame. Finally weeks of camping in starbucks does the trick of getting my pictures posted on the wall and comes with a complementary drink of Dulce De Leche! Yes and it taste damn good. You gotta try it though it will be at a slightly pricey. Food wise, you gotta try the uglier chicken puff.

Now I’m friends with most of the barista (Faezah, Noreen, Nabilah and Taufik) except a few. The store manager is a bit too unfriendly (friendly to those ang-mohs) and a shy lady, which don’t even dare to look at me.

Hey, do I look so fierce? Maybe, I’m just like a fruit I always describe myself as. Hard and spikey on the outside yet sweet and nice on the inside. So what fruit is it?

My favourite drink? Ice blended grape fruit with milk. It’s nice and easy on the throat. Cooling for the humid weather too.

Someone mentioned I look a bit gayish, hope others don’t feel the same.
